Frequently Asked Questions
Which sublimation ink do I need — Epson T49M or Inktec Sublinova G7?
Match by your printer category and production scale. Epson T49M (140ml bottles, from $29) — genuine Epson sublimation ink specifically for the Epson SureColor F170 and F570 desktop sublimation printers. These are Sawgrass-tier desktop machines used by small print shops, gift-shop operators, and Etsy sellers producing mugs, phone cases, mousepads and small apparel. The T49M is the ONLY Epson-approved ink for these printers — F170 and F570 chip locks prevent third-party ink from working reliably. Inktec Sublinova G7 (1000ml CMYK bottles, from $50) — Korean-made OEM-grade sublimation ink for wide-format machines built around Epson DX (DX5, DX7) and i3200 printheads. This includes Mutoh ValueJet sublimation variants, Epson SureColor F-series wide-format (F6000, F7000, F9000 with i3200 retrofit), and Chinese sublimation printers built on Epson printhead platforms. Inktec is one of the most established sublimation ink brands globally — production-grade, consistent batch chemistry, lower cost per liter than Epson OEM at wide-format scale.
Should I buy DS Transfer Paper in roll or sheet format?
Match by your printer's paper feed and your production volume. Epson DS Transfer Paper 24" × 100 ft Roll ($56) — for the SureColor F570 (24" wide-format desktop sublimation) and other roll-fed sublimation printers. Best for production runs where you're printing all-over-design apparel, larger fabric panels, or batch-pressing many items. Roll feed reduces setup time per print and material waste compared to cutting from individual sheets. Epson DS Transfer Multi-Use Paper 8.5" × 11" — 100 Sheets ($23.99) — for the SureColor F170 (8.5" desktop sublimation) and any sheet-fed printer used for sublimation. Best for variable-design jobs (one-off mugs, custom items), low-volume operations, and shops that need precise sheet-by-sheet control. Most operators with both an F170 AND an F570 keep both formats on hand. Critical: use Epson DS paper specifically with Epson sublimation printers — non-matched paper releases ink unevenly and produces faded or muddy transfers.
How is sublimation different from DTF (Direct-to-Film) or DTG (Direct-to-Garment)?
Three different garment-decoration technologies, each with different inks and substrate compatibility. Sublimation — dye is printed onto transfer paper, then heat-pressed at 380–400°F for 30–60 seconds onto polyester or polyester-coated substrates (mugs, phone cases, polyester apparel, ceramic tiles, sublimation-coated metals). The dye GASIFIES under heat and bonds with the polymer. Sublimation only works on poly-rich substrates — it will not adhere to 100% cotton. DTF (Direct-to-Film) — water-based pigment ink is printed onto a special PET film, dusted with adhesive powder, cured, then heat-pressed onto ANY fabric type (cotton, poly, blends, dark or light). DTF works on cotton; sublimation does not. See our DTF supplies. DTG (Direct-to-Garment) — water-based pigment ink printed directly onto cotton garments using a specialized inkjet printer (Epson SureColor F2100, Brother GTX). No paper or film involved. Works only on cotton/cotton-rich fabrics. Bottom line: sublimation for polyester and hard substrates; DTF for any-fabric transfers; DTG for direct cotton printing.
Can I use third-party sublimation ink in my Epson SureColor F170 or F570?
Not reliably. The Epson SureColor F170 and F570 are designed as closed-ink ecosystem machines, similar in concept to Sawgrass printers. Each ink bottle carries a chip that the printer reads on installation. Third-party "compatible" sublimation inks for F-series desktop machines either don't work at all (chip rejected) or work briefly and then cause head clogging, color shift, or warranty voiding. Save yourself the headache and use Epson T49M genuine ink — it's the only formulation guaranteed to maintain head life and color accuracy across the F170/F570 warranty period. The wide-format SureColor F-series machines (F6070, F7070, F9070) have less restrictive ink ecosystems and can run third-party inks like Inktec Sublinova G7 — but always check your specific machine's manual first.
What temperature and time do I need for sublimation pressing?
Standard sublimation press settings are 380–400°F (193–204°C) for 30–60 seconds with firm pressure, but the exact recipe varies by substrate. Polyester apparel (light colors): 385°F, 45 seconds, medium-firm pressure. Polyester apparel (dark/sublimation-prepared): 400°F, 60 seconds, firm pressure. Ceramic mugs: 400°F, 180 seconds in a mug press. Polyester phone cases: 390°F, 60 seconds, light pressure (cases are delicate). Sublimation-coated metal photo panels: 400°F, 60–90 seconds, firm pressure. Always check the substrate manufacturer's spec sheet — sublimation-prepared products from different suppliers (FRP, ChromaLuxe, Vapor Apparel, etc.) have specific recommendations. Test on a sample first when switching substrate brands.
What is the return policy on sublimation inks and paper?
Sublimation inks and transfer papers are consumables. Sealed, unopened ink bottles and unopened paper rolls/sheet packs are eligible for store credit only, not a refund to the original payment method. Opened ink bottles cannot be returned or exchanged — once the seal is broken, the product is no longer resellable. Inspect your delivery on arrival; shipping damage (leaked or compromised bottles, water-damaged paper) must be reported within 48 hours with photo documentation. See our full refund and return policy.
