What does a capping station do, and when does it fail?

The capping station seals the printhead nozzle plate whenever the head is parked — overnight, between jobs, and during idle time. Its rubber lip creates an airtight seal that prevents ink from drying on the nozzles. It also provides the suction path that cleaning cycles pull through to clear clogs. Failure signs: overnight drying becomes regular, morning startups need more cleaning cycles, the rubber visibly cracks or hardens, or cleaning cycles complete but the nozzle check looks the same or worse (weak suction). How often should I replace my capping station?

Inspect every 3 months, replace annually minimum. Replace sooner if you see any of: visible cracking or hardening of the rubber lip, overnight ink drying that wasn't happening before, cleaning cycles that complete without clearing nozzles, or weak suction during cleaning. In high-volume DTF production with white ink, plan to replace every 6–9 months — white ink solids accelerate rubber degradation. At $28–$43 for most Epson and Roland capping units, this is one of the cheapest preventive replacements you can make to protect a $400–$1,500 printhead.

What's the difference between a cap top, a capping station, and a maintenance assembly?

Cap top — just the rubber sealing component that contacts the nozzle plate (e.g. Roland RE-640 6701409200, XC-540 1000004546). Cheapest to replace; covers most maintenance needs. Capping station / capping unit — the cap top plus its housing, mounting bracket, and sometimes the tubing connection (e.g. Epson i3200/i1600/5113 capping unit, Mimaki JV33 M007389). Maintenance assembly — the complete service module including the capping unit, ink pump, tubing, and pump motor (e.g. Mutoh ValueJet DG-41000). Maintenance assemblies are the highest-cost replacement but cover multiple failure modes at once.
