Before replacing a printhead, diagnose the actual cause. Most print quality failures — including banding, missing nozzles, and color issues — are caused by worn accessories (dampers, capping station, wiper blade), not the printhead itself.
Diagnose by symptom
Banding & Horizontal LinesRegular horizontal lines across the print. Usually clogged nozzles or a failing damper on that color channel — not a dead head. Step-by-step diagnosis. Missing NozzlesGaps or missing rows in the nozzle check pattern. Dried nozzles, air in the ink lines, or early-stage blockage. How to distinguish fixable from failed. Color Shifting & Wrong ColorsColors printing in the wrong channel. Usually a leaking damper causing cross-contamination, or a data cable fault misaddressing channels. Ink StarvationPrints fade progressively mid-swath. Failing dampers or clogged ink filters restricting flow — the printhead is usually fine. Head StrikesSudden complete color loss after a media jam or height error. Physical nozzle damage — how to confirm it and prevent recurrence.
