Best Printheads for UV Printing in 2026
Resource Center › Buying Guides
UV printing uses three dominant printhead platforms: the Epson i3200-U1, the Ricoh GEN5 (UV variant), and the Konica KM1024i. Each suits a different scale of UV operation. This guide explains which head makes sense at which production level.
UV printhead comparison
| Head | Best for | Nozzles | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epson i3200-U1 | Entry to mid-volume UV flatbed and roll-to-roll | 3,200 | 6–14 months |
| Ricoh GEN5 (UV) | Mid to high-volume UV flatbed, commercial signage | 1,280 | 12–24 months |
| Konica KM1024i | Industrial large-format, high duty cycle production | 1,024/ch | 18–36 months |
What matters for UV printing
- Chemical resistance — UV-curable inks are significantly more aggressive than water-based or eco-solvent inks. Only UV-rated head variants can withstand sustained exposure. Never install a water-based (A1) or eco-solvent (E1) head in a UV application.
- Drop size range — smaller minimum drop sizes produce smoother gradients and finer detail on rigid substrates. The i3200-U1 starts at 3.8 pl; Ricoh GEN5 starts at 5 pl; KM1024i at 14 pl.
- Frequency — higher firing frequency increases throughput. The i3200-U1 runs to 43 kHz; Ricoh GEN6 to 40+ kHz; KM1024i to ~20 kHz at native resolution.
