Genuine vs Refurbished Printheads
Resource Center › Buying Guides
The terms OEM, genuine, refurbished, pulled, and grey-market are used inconsistently across the printhead market — sometimes deliberately. This guide explains exactly what each term means, how to verify a genuine head before you buy, and why the cost difference over 12 months almost always favours OEM.
What the terms actually mean
| Term | What it means | Warranty |
|---|---|---|
| Genuine OEM | Factory-new head in original manufacturer packaging. Epson, Ricoh, Konica, etc. seal intact. Never installed. | Full manufacturer warranty |
| Compatible | Third-party head manufactured to be physically similar but not made by the OEM. Quality varies widely. | Supplier warranty only |
| Refurbished | A used head that has been cleaned, repaired, and repackaged. Prior print volume unknown. Internal wear is unknown. | Varies — typically 30–90 days |
| Pulled | A head removed from a scrapped printer. May have high print volume. Condition unverifiable. Sometimes listed as "OEM" because it came from a genuine machine. | None |
| Grey market | Pulled or refurbished heads repackaged in boxes that mimic original OEM packaging. The most dangerous category — difficult to distinguish from genuine without inspection. | None |
The grey-market problem
"Generic" printheads do not exist as factory alternatives. Epson, Ricoh, and Konica Minolta do not manufacture lower-grade versions of their heads. Any head listed as "generic," "compatible," "A-grade," or "factory equivalent" is either a pulled head, a refurbished head, or a third-party copy — regardless of how it is packaged. Digiprint USA sells only factory-new, sealed OEM heads.
How to verify a genuine OEM printhead
Before installing any printhead, verify these four things:
Holographic seal intact on the packaging
Every genuine Epson, Ricoh, and Konica printhead ships with a manufacturer holographic authentication seal on the outer box. If the seal is missing, broken, or has been re-applied, the head has been opened and is not new OEM regardless of what the seller claims.
Original branded packaging
Genuine heads ship in manufacturer-branded boxes with the correct model designation, part number, and serial number printed on the exterior label. Plain white boxes, generic packaging, or handwritten labels indicate a non-OEM or repackaged head.
Serial number matches the packaging
The serial number printed on the head itself must match the serial number on the packaging label. A mismatch indicates the head has been swapped — a pulled or grey-market head placed in a genuine OEM box.
Supplier transparency
A legitimate supplier will state clearly whether they sell OEM, compatible, or refurbished heads. Vague descriptions like "equivalent," "replacement grade," "A-grade OEM," or "compatible genuine" are flags. Ask directly: is this a factory-new, sealed OEM head in original manufacturer packaging?
Real cost over 12 months — OEM vs refurbished
The upfront price difference between OEM and refurbished heads looks significant. The 12-month operating cost tells a different story:
| Genuine OEM i3200-A1 | Refurbished i3200 | |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | $997 | $400–$600 (typical) |
| Expected lifespan (high vol. DTF) | 6–10 months with good maintenance | 1–4 months (unknown prior wear) |
| Heads needed over 12 months | 1–2 | 3–12 (varies widely) |
| 12-month head cost | $997–$1,994 | $1,200–$7,200 |
| Downtime risk | Low — predictable replacement cycle | High — unpredictable failure timing |
| Warranty | Full manufacturer warranty | Typically 30–90 days |
Note: refurbished head lifespan varies enormously because prior print volume is unknown. A refurbished head that has already printed 8 months of its service life has a very short remaining lifespan regardless of how it looks at purchase.
