A significant share of Digiprint USA's customers are print shops, distributors, and repair technicians based outside the US — in Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Trinidad, and across the Caribbean. For most of them, sourcing genuine OEM printheads is the hard part. Local distributors carry limited stock, prices are high, and waiting weeks for a head while a printer sits idle costs real money.
Miami's freight forwarding infrastructure changes that equation completely. Here's how the process works, what it costs, how to handle import duties, and what to watch out for when ordering high-value parts internationally.
Why Miami is the right hub for Latin America and the Caribbean
Digiprint USA ships from Doral, Florida — a warehouse district in western Miami-Dade County that houses one of the highest concentrations of freight forwarders in the United States. Doral is where a large portion of Latin American and Caribbean import volume gets consolidated and shipped. The area around NW 107th Avenue and NW 58th Street has dozens of freight forwarding companies that handle daily consolidated shipments to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Trinidad, and most Caribbean islands.
When you place an order with us before 2PM EST, it ships the same day. If your freight forwarder's facility is in Doral, the distance from our warehouse to their receiving dock is often under 10 miles — which means UPS or FedEx ground delivery arrives the next morning.
How freight forwarding works for printhead orders
If you don't have a US shipping address, a freight forwarder gives you one. Here's how the typical flow works:
The HS code for printheads
When importing printer printheads, the correct HS code is 8443.99.59 (parts and accessories for printing machinery, other). In the US export classification this falls under Schedule B 8443.99.5900. At import, most countries use their own tariff schedule derived from the HS system — your customs broker or freight forwarder will convert this to the local code.
Using the correct HS code matters. Incorrect classification can cause your shipment to be held, reassessed, or subjected to the wrong duty rate. If your forwarder asks for the code, use 8443.99 as the 6-digit international base — the 4 additional digits vary by country.
Import duties by country — what to expect
Duty rates on printer parts vary significantly by country. This table covers the most common destinations for Digiprint USA's international customers. These are approximate MFN (Most Favored Nation) rates for HS 8443.99 — your actual rate may differ based on your country's specific tariff schedule, any active free trade agreements, and how your customs authority classifies the specific product.
| Country | Approx. import duty | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Colombia | 5–10% | VAT (IVA) of 19% also applies. Colombia-US FTA may reduce duty to 0% depending on product origin certification. |
| Mexico | 0–5% | USMCA (T-MEC) typically brings duty to 0% for US-origin goods. Consult your customs broker on origin requirements. |
| Peru | 0–6% | US-Peru FTA in force. Many technology products enter at reduced or zero duty with proper documentation. |
| Ecuador | 5–10% | No active FTA with the US as of 2026. Standard MFN rate applies. |
| Dominican Republic | 3–8% | DR-CAFTA covers goods originating in the US. Most printer parts qualify for reduced rates. |
| Jamaica | 0–10% | No US-Jamaica FTA. Standard CARICOM external tariff applies. Some technology equipment is duty-exempt. |
| Trinidad & Tobago | 0–10% | CARICOM member. Printer parts often attract low or zero duty under CARICOM CET provisions. |
| Panama | 0–5% | US-Panama FTA in force. Technology parts generally enter at low or zero duty. |
| Costa Rica | 0–5% | CAFTA-DR covers US-origin goods. Most printer parts at 0–1%. |
| Venezuela | Varies | Customs clearance process is irregular. Work with an experienced forwarder who knows the current procedures. |
| Argentina | 10–20% | Higher import duties. Argentina applies statistical fees in addition to tariff. Confirm with local customs broker. |
| Chile | 0–6% | US-Chile FTA in force. Technology equipment typically 0% for US-origin goods. |
Air freight vs ocean freight for printheads
For most printhead orders, air freight is the right call. A printhead worth $700–$2,000 sitting in ocean freight for two weeks while a production printer is down is a straightforward cost calculation — the downtime cost almost always exceeds the freight cost difference.
Ocean freight makes more sense when you're stocking up on spare parts — dampers, capping stations, wiper blades, cables — where there's no urgency and the weight justifies the ocean rate. The printhead itself should travel by air.
Air freight from Miami to most Latin American destinations runs 1–3 business days. To most Caribbean islands, 1–4 business days depending on frequency of service to that island.
How to verify the head is genuine on arrival
Counterfeit and grey-market printheads circulate heavily in Latin American markets. Some are repackaged refurbished heads. Others are genuine used heads that have been cleaned and resealed. Before installing any head shipped internationally, check these:
- Factory seal intact — the anti-static bag should be heat-sealed from the factory, not resealed with tape or a zip-lock closure.
- Serial number on the head body — genuine Epson, Ricoh, and Konica heads all have a serial number printed or laser-etched directly on the head body. If it's missing or looks printed on a label, that's a red flag.
- Hologram or authentication seal — Epson heads include a holographic authentication seal on the packaging. Ricoh heads have a manufacturer label with part number and lot code. Check that these match the product you ordered.
- Nozzle plate condition — some heads will have a small amount of clear or lightly tinted fluid on or near the nozzle plate. This is normal — it's recirculation fluid applied during factory testing and storage, not a sign the head has been used. What you're watching for is heavy ink staining, dried pigment buildup, or discolouration across the nozzle face, which would indicate the head has been run in a printer.
- Weight feels right — a head that feels significantly lighter than expected may have had components removed.
Every head we ship is factory-sealed genuine OEM. We include the manufacturer documentation and can provide photos of the sealed packaging before shipment on request — useful if you need to show your client the head was genuine at point of dispatch.
Order verification for freight forwarder shipments
Printheads are high-value parts, and orders shipping to freight forwarder addresses are a known target for payment fraud and unauthorized use of card details. To protect both our customers and ourselves, we require identity verification on all orders shipping to freight forwarder addresses.
After placing your order, send an email to info@digiprint-usa.com with the following:
- Your order number
- A copy of a government-issued ID (passport or national ID card)
- A photo of the credit or debit card used — showing only the last 4 digits and the cardholder name (cover the middle digits for your own security)
We will not ship to a freight forwarder address until this verification is complete. This applies to all new customers and to any order where the shipping address is a forwarding facility. For returning customers who have previously verified, we will confirm whether re-verification is needed on a case-by-case basis.
