Product Information

The Epson DX7 Solvent Printhead — 2nd Coded is the genuine original Epson DX7 printhead in its most recent encrypted variant, engineered for eco-solvent and mild solvent wide-format printers manufactured after 2013. The DX7 is Epson's seventh-generation MicroPiezo printhead and the dominant head platform used across hundreds of Chinese wide-format printer models for signage, banner, vehicle wrap, and vinyl production. With 8 channels, 1,440 total nozzles, and Variable-Sized Droplet Technology from 1.5 pl to 21 pl, the DX7 delivers the balance of speed, resolution, and ink economy that made it the industry standard for eco-solvent production. Every 2nd coded DX7 we stock at Digiprint USA is 100% genuine original Epson — not refurbished, not compatible, not unlocked aftermarket.

How to Identify Your DX7 Coding Version — Do This Before Ordering

The three DX7 coding versions are physically identical printheads — the only difference is encryption in the head's control circuitry and the cable. Installing the wrong version will result in a head the printer's control board cannot authenticate. Here is how to determine which version your printer requires:

Step 1: Locate the label on your current printhead (or on the printer's carriage board documentation).

Step 2: Find the bottom line of text — it contains a 3-letter alphanumeric code.

Step 3: Check the first letter of that 3-letter code:

First Letter of Head ID Coding Version Printer Era Board Number
E or F Non-Coded (not encrypted) Before late 2013 Below 1530
G or H 1st Coded (1st encrypted) Late 2013 – 2014 Around 1530
I, J, or K 2nd Coded (2nd encrypted) — this listing After 2014 ≥ 1530

Important: The head ID alone is not always conclusive — also check the first four digits on the head circuit board. If the number equals or exceeds 1530, the printer requires a 2nd Coded head. If you are unsure, contact us before ordering and we will help you confirm the correct version.

DX7 Coding Version Comparison

Version Head ID Works On Non-Coded Boards Works On 1st Coded Boards Works On 2nd Coded Boards
Non-Coded E / F
1st Coded G / H
2nd Coded (this listing) I / J / K

We stock all three versions — Non-Coded, 1st Coded, and 2nd Coded. If you are not sure which version you need, contact us before ordering.

Compatible Printers

The 2nd Coded DX7 is used in Chinese eco-solvent wide-format printers manufactured after 2013 by major OEM print engine suppliers. Compatible models include:

• Fengda Technology X8126NDE

• Forni 7090E

• MeiTu MT-StarJet 7702 / 7702L / 7703 / 7703L / 77802L / W7701

• Sanyi Tech / SinoColor Storm SJ-1260 / SJ-740 / SJ-740i

• TEC Sign Maker TJ-1601

• Wit-Color Ultra 9200

The DX7 platform is used across many more Chinese wide-format printer brands and models than can be listed here. If your printer uses a DX7 head and was manufactured after 2013, confirm the head ID using the method above before ordering. About the Epson DX7 Platform

The DX7 is Epson's seventh-generation MicroPiezo printhead — the most widely deployed eco-solvent printhead platform in the Chinese wide-format printer market. It succeeded the DX5 with a step-change improvement in minimum drop size: from 3.5 pl (DX5) to 1.5 pl minimum, enabling finer gradients, sharper fine text, and smoother colour transitions on vinyl, banner, backlit film, and vehicle wrap substrates. The 1440-nozzle, 8-channel layout across an 8 kHz firing frequency gives DX7-based printers the production throughput to run multiple shifts on high-volume signage and display work. The Variable-Sized Droplet Technology — selecting from 1.5 pl through 21 pl per dot in real-time — allows the printer's RIP to choose the optimum drop size for each area of the image, combining fine highlight detail with fast flood-fill coverage on solid backgrounds. Epson sells this head to Chinese OEM printer manufacturers, who integrate it into their own carriage and ink delivery architectures under their own brand names — which is why the same DX7 printhead appears under dozens of different printer labels.

Why Epson Introduced Coding — and Why It Matters for Your Purchase

Epson introduced an encryption system (coding) into the DX7 printhead around 2013 to manage compatibility between printheads and printer control boards. The three coding versions are not a quality tier — all three are the same physical printhead with identical print specifications. The difference is in the authentication protocol between the head's embedded controller and the printer's main board. A 2nd Coded head contains an encryption key that only 2nd Coded main boards can authenticate. Installing a 1st Coded head in a 2nd Coded printer will result in a "printhead not recognised" error that cannot be resolved by any amount of cleaning or resetting — the head simply will not be accepted by the board. This is why verifying your coding version before ordering is the single most important step in the DX7 replacement process.

Applications

Eco-solvent wide-format signage — vinyl banners, outdoor graphics, POS displays, and retail signage

Vehicle wrapping and fleet graphics — precision colour on cast and calendared vinyl wrap media

Backlit film and display graphics — indoor and window display output on backlit and self-adhesive substrates

Textile and transfer printing — fabric banner and soft signage output on DX7-based printer platforms

High-volume production signage — multi-shift banner, poster, and signage production environments

Warranty Notice

This printhead carries a manufacturer warranty. Warranty coverage is voided by: use of inks other than eco-solvent or mild solvent, clogged or damaged nozzles resulting from incompatible inks or improper maintenance, misuse, neglect, improper installation, and damage caused by incorrect coding version selection (installing this 2nd Coded head in a non-coded or 1st Coded printer). Due to the sensitive nature of inkjet printhead components, Digiprint USA cannot accept returns or refunds once the printhead has been installed. All sales are final. Verify your coding version before ordering — contact us if you are unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my printer needs a 2nd Coded DX7?
Check the label on your existing printhead. Find the bottom line of text — it contains a short alphanumeric code. If the first letter of that code is I, J, or K, your printer uses a 2nd Coded head. You can also check the first four digits on the head circuit board — if that number is 1530 or greater, your printer requires 2nd Coded. If you are still unsure, contact us with a photo of your old head label and we will confirm.

Can I install a 1st Coded DX7 in a 2nd Coded printer?
No. The coding versions are not interchangeable. Installing a 1st Coded head in a 2nd Coded printer will produce a "printhead not recognised" error. The printer's control board can only authenticate a head with matching encryption. No cleaning, resetting, or firmware change will resolve a coding mismatch — the wrong head must be returned unused and the correct version installed.

Are the DX7 Non-Coded, 1st Coded, and 2nd Coded physically the same head?
Yes — the printhead body, nozzle configuration, drop size, and all print specifications are identical across all three versions. The only differences are the encryption in the head controller and the cable. A 1st Coded head will work in any 1st or 2nd Coded printer but comes with a different cable than the 2nd Coded version — which is another reason the wrong version cannot simply be substituted.

What ink types can I use with the DX7 2nd Coded?
Eco-solvent and mild solvent inks only. The DX7 is not rated for hard solvent, UV-curable, aqueous, or latex inks. Use of incompatible inks will cause internal seal degradation, nozzle plate damage, and premature head failure — and will void the warranty.

Do you ship the Epson DX7 to Latin America?
Yes — same day shipping from our Doral, Miami FL warehouse. Our location is ideal for Latin American sign shops, vehicle wrap operations, and wide-format service centres using freight forwarders in the Doral area.
