Why Does the Cap Top Need Replacing?

When the Gen5 printhead parks at the home position between print jobs and overnight, the cap top presses against the nozzle face to create an airtight seal. In UV ink environments, photoinitiators cause progressive viscosity increase on air exposure, so this seal is what keeps the nozzles primed rather than curing or drying in place. Every capping cycle presses the rubber cap against the nozzle plate, and over months of daily use the rubber compresses, hardens, and picks up dried ink residue along the seal edge. Once the rubber loses its shape or ink builds up on the contact surface, the cap can no longer form a complete seal — air reaches the nozzles during idle periods and ink dries inside the channels. At that point, cleaning and purge cycles also lose suction, since the cap top doubles as the sealed chamber the pump draws through, so nozzles that would normally recover with a standard cleaning cycle stay blocked instead. A worn cap top left in service long enough causes permanent nozzle blockages that no amount of cleaning will resolve.
