Mutoh ValueJet Printhead Replacement: Compatible Parts, Dampers, Cables and Maintenance Stations

Most ValueJet head failures we see on the second head, not the first. The shop replaced the head, reused everything around it, and the same problem came back inside six months. This is the parts list per ValueJet generation, with the reason each one matters. Head selection itself is in the Mutoh printhead guide.

VJ-1324 / 1624 / 1638 (DG-43988)

Boards — when it isn't the head at all

If a fresh head, fresh cable and correct installation still produce no output on one or more channels, suspect the board. We stock the VJ-1614 main board DG-44332, VJ-1324 main board DG-42958, and the VJ-1604 heater control board DG-41105. Diagnose before you buy: our post on a printhead not recognized after installation lays out the order to check things.

Installation notes specific to ValueJets

  1. Power off at the main switch, not standby. Mutoh head boards are unforgiving of hot-plugging.
  2. Fill the new head with cleaning solution before the first ink fill, then purge until all channels flow clear.
  3. After install, run head alignment and bi-directional adjustment from the printer's menu. A misaligned new head prints worse than the old one and gets blamed unfairly.
  4. Set the head rank/ID if the machine prompts for one — it's printed on the head label.

The cost of skipping the parts

Cable, four dampers and a cap top for a VJ-1604 total a small fraction of the head price. A maintenance assembly is more, but it's the single part that decides whether the head dries out overnight. Against a $1,350–$1,500 head, none of these are optional. Our kits vs. separate parts post covers when bundling makes sense.

Frequently asked questions

What parts should I replace with a Mutoh ValueJet printhead?

The head data cable, all dampers, and — if the old head failed from drying — the maintenance station or cap top. On the VJ-1604/1614/1618 that's the 31-pin DX5 cable, DX5 dampers and the DG-40356 or DG-41000 maintenance assembly.

Why isn't my new Mutoh printhead recognized?

In order of likelihood: the data cable is reused, creased or seated one pin off; the printer was powered on during connection; or the head board has failed. Replace the cable first, confirm orientation, then look at the board.

Do Mutoh VJ-1604 and VJ-1624 use the same dampers?

No. The VJ-1604/1614/1618 use the shared DX5-family dampers. The VJ-1324/1624/1638 use a different head (DG-43988) with its own damper connector. Check your model before ordering.

Should I replace the maintenance station with the printhead?

If the previous head died from dried ink or clogging, yes — the maintenance station's cap and pump are what failed to keep it wet. Installing a new head on a worn station repeats the failure.
